What's the difference between MetaGrid Pro and MetaGrid

MetaGrid Pro is the next step in the evolution of our MetaGrid concept. It is a completely new app with tons of new features and improvements. It supports iOS13 and later so it can't be installed on older iPads. The original MetaGrid supports iOS12 and later so it can be used on older iPads. Both apps can be used at the same time to control a single Mac/PC computer.

Which iPad should I choose for MetaGrid Pro/Metagrid?

Basically any iPad that runs the supported iOS for MetaGrid Pro (iOS13 and later)/MetaGrid (iOS12 and later) is fine. However, we recommend iPad Pro due to the screen size.

Can I run MetaGrid on my iPhone?

No. MetaGrid has been optimised for iPads (including iPad Pro). If you are looking for a controller for iPhone, have a look at MetaPad - our gesture-based controller for iPhone.

Do I need any additional software to connect MetaGrid to my computer?

Yes. You need to download and install MetaServer - a free server application that receives and processes all incoming communication from MetaSystem apps including keyboard shortcuts, text and MIDI messages. You can find it in the Download section. For more information on MetaServer, see the respective F.A.Q section. For the DAW setup for Windows, you need a virtual MIDI cable software - we recommend LoopMIDI.

Can I connect multiple iOS devices with MetaGrid to one computer?

Yes. You can connect up to 4 iOS devices with MetaSystem apps to your computer to create a powerful remote control system for your Mac/PC desktop/laptop.

Does MetaGrid support USB connection?

Yes. Metagrid supports USB connection both on Mac and Windows. For Windows, you need to install Apple iTunes to enable USB communication.

Can I transfer my views to another iOS device with MetaGrid installed?

Yes. You can import/export entire database through your Dropbox account.

Can I export/import individual views or buttons?

Yes, you can export/import individual buttons, views and viewsets through your Dropbox account.

Does Metagrid keep MIDI port assignments when I restart my Mac?

Yes. All supported DAWs keep MIDI port assignments when you restart your Mac.

What is MetaServer?

It is a small application that receives/sends and processes all incoming communication from Metasystem apps including keyboard shortcuts, text and MIDI messages. The application can be downloaded from the Download section free of charge.

Does MetaServer save any files on my computer?

Metaserver saves only debug logs which may be used for solving connection issues.

Where are MetaServer logs located?

MAC: .\users\[user]\library\Metaserver.log
WIN: c:\Users\[user]\AppData\Roaming\Metaserver.log

Does MetaServer store/intercept any data from my computer?

Metaserver retrieves only the list of applications installed on your computer - this info is used for displaying application icons in Metasystem apps. The data reside only on your iPad/iPhone/computer and is not shared with Metasystem.

How many MetaSystem apps can be connected to one MetaSystem instance?

MetaServer simultanously supports up to 4 iOS devices with MetaGrid/MetaPad, which enables you to create multi-device surface setups. No additional steps are needed to connect additional devices through WiFi or USB.

How to remove MetaServer from my computer?

Just delete the application from your computer.

Metagrid/Metpad can't find any computers available for connection. What should I do?

Metasystem apps should seamlessly connect to your computer. Make sure both your iOS device and your Mac/PC are connected to the same network. If Metagrid/Metapad can't find your computer, refresh the list of hosts on the Connection Screen by pulling down the host list. If problem persists, close and restart Metagrid/Metapad on your iOS device, or restart your iOS device. If it doesn’t help, email us at support@metasystem.io - we will do our best to help you.

Hi - glad you’ve found your way here. I am Przemyslaw Mieszkowski - a linguist, iOS developer and UX designer by trade and a composer/guitar player by passion. I am the designer of MetaSystem apps and the head of a small iOS development team located in Wroclaw, Poland. As arts|UNMUTED we were developing tools for musicians and composers for Liine Lemur. Our products found home in many studios and composers’ suites. Finally, we decided to transfer our concepts to iOS and make them available for wider audience.

What is our mission?

We are controller freaks pursuing the dream for flexible, user-friendly and ultra customisable controller applications that streamline the workflow of creative professionals and power users, boost creativity by offloading the brain and, consequently, make work more fun.

Who uses our apps?

Our apps are used around the globe by composers, musicians, sound engineers, photographers, video editors and coders to control complex software applications on Mac/Windows workstations and laptops. MetaGrid/MetaPad are flexible enough to cover various scenarios and are used for example for controlling cameras for MMA fights, controlling stage lighting in theatres and enhancing the workflow for broadcasters.

Metagrid/Metapad enable you to import/export content through your Dropbox account. You can share it on our forum or send the files directly to your friends/colleagues.
